Before you make a costly mistake, take the time to inspect the tong under the home. You may be surprised to find that it is held in place by only six bolts, three per side. Two are located on the outside edge and one on the inside edge of the I-beam.
Place a brace under the tong to keep it
from falling and then remove the six bolts.
The tong can now be lowered to the ground and slid under the home, out of
sight, for storage.
CAUTION!
If, for some
unfortunate reason, it is necessary to cut the tong off,
DO
NOT MAKE A STRAIGHT CUT!
This is VERY IMPORTANT.
This is about “surface area”. A
“straight cut”
does not leave enough surface area to weld to if the
tong should ever need to be welded back on.
An “angle cut”
produces a longer surface area. There is a math formula that dictates how long the cut must be based on the width; the person cutting the tong off should know that formula. If they do not, then they are not knowledgeable enough to be cutting off your tong!
