There are TWO kinds of heat registers. One you mount in the wall that is not made to stand on and the other you mount in the floor. There are four basic sizes for floor mounting. They are: 6" x 6", 4" x 10", 4" x 8", 4" x 6", 2 1/2" x 10". Those measurements are the hole in the floor, not the outside edge of the register. They come in two colors, brown and white.
Close registers in rooms that are not being used on a daily basis and you will see a reduction in your heating bill. Leave doors open to rooms that you want warm while you are away and this will keep your home at the same temperature throughout.
Do not cover return air vents. They are usually located under windows. Your furnace draws air through the floor from those vents. When you cover the vents the furnace needs to work harder to warm the air. And your floors will feel colder. That's because they are colder.
